Healthy Recipes: Green Burgers

These fantastic green burgers are maybe even more fun to eat than regular hamburgers!

As more and more information points to the importance of decreasing our consumption of red meat and increasing the amount of vegetables in our diet, new takes on old classics have become increasingly popular. Incorporating these green burgers into your diet may be a perfect way to start following these new dietary guidelines.  The use of gluten-free oats helps to give the patties a burger-like consistency while the addition of protein-rich peas and beans helps make the meal nearly as filling as a regular burger. Very easy to prepare, pan-cook, oven bake or grill as you prefer!


1 medium white onion, diced

½ cup gluten-free oats

½ cup organic spinach

½ cup parsley

½ cup basil

1 cup lightly cooked peas

1 cup lightly cooked white beans (may also use chickpeas)

Sea salt

Black pepper

Olive oil


Blend together onion and oats in food processor

Add the remaining ingredients one at a time and blend in food processor

After adding the peas and beans the mixture should start to come together with a dough-like appearance

Knead slightly by hand and form into hamburger patty shapes

Brush each side lightly with olive oil and cook as desired

For pan cooking, cook each side for approximately 4-5 minutes; in oven and on grill cook each side for about 8-9 minutes

Serve warm with favorite extras, we like tomatoes, mustard and pickles!
